Another possibly controversial blog, fair warning. Maybe not appropriate for kids, depending upon your personal feelings.
Today, after photographing puppies, Jeremy, our friend Caroline and I went out target shooting. I know there are some people who are afraid of, or uneasy around, guns, but I grew up with them and they don't bother me at all.
My dad was of the opinion that if you have guns and you have kids, if you teach your kids how to shoot and take the "mystery" out of the process, you remove much of the danger of them getting into them when you're not around, out of curiosity. I can't say whether that's true or not, all I can say is it worked that way in my case.
Jeremy owns a few guns, and I believe it is irresponsible of me to live in a house with weapons I don't know how to use properly. So, we go target shooting. We're not hunters, we have no desire to hunt. But I really enjoy target shooting, and our friend Caroline had gone shooting before, in college, and welcomed the opportunity, too.
Above you see me with Jeremy's WASR-10. To the right was our preparation for the afternoon.
It was my first time shooting the rifle, but I really enjoyed it. The kick wasn't too hard, and I took out one of the water jugs on my first try!

And to the right is the result of Caroline shooting another jug with the rifle.
She also enjoyed shooting the Colt. Here she is shooting, with the brass popping up in the air. I was pretty happy with the timing.
Unfortunately we ran out of time, so didn't get to shoot the shotgun and try to hit any clay pigeons with it. Next time.
As it got later and closer to sunset, another small group of people happened by. They seemed really impressed by Jeremy's lineup (and also that he had "chicks that shoot" with him .. ha ha)
They were nice enough people, though, and since the place we were at is kind of an "unofficial" shooting range out in the desert, they ended up shooting beside us. I was impressed by the level of mutual respect found amongst people out there shooting guns (as opposed to the horror stories I'd heard about people who go out to shoot and decide to drink alcohol while doing so). I wasn't sure exactly what they were shooting with, but Jeremy said it was in the M-16 family. I wasn't paying too close of attention, until Caroline said I should get pictures of the "flames" shooting out of them! haha.
Thankfully, they were cool with my taking some shots, so I got to see that this was what she meant.
Like guns or not, you kinda have to admit this looks pretty cool! I'm sure one of the gun enthusiasts on my list (I know there's at least a couple) can explain what's going on here better than I can, so I'll leave it to them.
