Blog EntryTasty Tour of the Middle East ...Oct 28, '07 1:20 AM
for everyone
When we were in Wisconsin last weekend, Jeremy and I headed out on our own on Sunday to find some unique food. We're adventurous eaters and often enjoy Thai, Indian, Vientamese and Iranian food. But we'd never had Afghani! So, off we went to Kabul's Afghanistan and Mediterranean Restaurant in Madison, WI. Wow! We had a soup there, called Mashawa, that about knocked our socks off it was so good. In fact, we asked for a "to go" menu, so that we could remember the name of it to look up a recipe when we got home. That's what I did this morning and, much to my surprise and enjoyment, I found not only "a" recipe for Mashawa, but "the" recipe from that very restaurant! Yay! So we decided to go all out and cook ourselves up a Mid-Eastern feast! We made a bunch of things we've never made before and it was most excellent. Here's a pic of our feast: Mashawa (a very traditional Afghani soup with lamb and chicken), Garlic Naan (Indian flat bread), Saffron rice and Indian Boti Kababs (lamb and chicken). Now, speaking of Saffron, did you know how expensive that stuff is?? They nickname it the "gold of the spice world". We ended up getting about 1 teaspoon, for $15. Sheesh!

Anyway, the food was incredible and there's lots remaining for leftovers (my favorite).

Sorry, but the Naan recipe was on the back of the mix we bought at a local kitchen store.
